RAYANNE AROSE
A musical rebirth
My connection to music and singing began at a very early age. I always loved to sing, and til this day, I often catch myself humming unconsciously. I’ve dreamt of being a singer since my pre-teen years, and by High School, I began sharing videos online and singing in talent shows. Unfortunately, my self-criticism and perfectionism got the best of me and I feel into a complete silence for many years.
It wasn’t until the age of 22 that my healing journey brought my voice back. My musical ‘rebirth’ came after a series of powerfully healing ceremonies, in which I recognized how detrimental my silence was to my health on all levels. Through my inner work, I came to remember that my connection to music is and always will be at the core of my being. I finally began teaching myself the guitar, as I was inspired to learn and sing the medicine songs that were helping me heal. When I started sharing my authentic voice with my loved ones, and eventually, strangers, the reflections I received empowered me to continue doing what I loved. The more comfortable I became with taking up space, the more my voice emerged in ways that surprised me.
I only began writing songs within the past two years. It was never something I could sit down and work on. I have only ‘written’ songs through spontaneous moments of inspiration and receptivity. This often happens when I am walking alone in the forest, or right after waking up in the morning. The words just come to me, and it it my job to let go of my mind’s need to direct the words, and simply allow them come through. Sometimes they come all at once, and sometimes they comes in pieces, and I have to connect them. I see this process as a co-creation between myself and something I cannot see, something I call Spirit.
Singing with the Heart
The words that come to me when I think of my sound are: raw, melodic, and earthy. Over the recent years, music and nature have been a huge part of my spiritual journey, and the genre of music that I’ve connected with the most is medicine music. Artists such as Ayla Schafer, Nessi Gomes, and Peia, to name a few, have been a great inspiration for my music. These artists perform with the utmost vulnerability and presence. I have learned, through watching these artists, that a medicine song can only truly be healing when it is sung with Heart. The singer becomes the song, and to do so, they must put their ego aside for the song to channel through them and touch the hearts of all who listen. It takes meeting the shadowy parts of oneself to reach new depths of vulnerability, and to be able to share that vulnerability through one’s voice is powerfully healing. This is exactly how I wish for my music and sound to reach my listeners, and I am dedicated to letting my heart guide how my music evolves and transforms.
Medicine music
I believe one of my roles in this life is to share my voice with the world. Medicine music has helped me tremendously on my healing journey, and my intention for my music is that it brings listeners to a place of remembrance of who they are. I believe all medicine songs come from one Source, and I believe that music is for everyone. I hope that my music inspires listeners to find their voice and walk their most authentic path. Whether I’m sharing my music in intimate ceremonial spaces, online, or on stage, I intend to remain humble and grounded in myself and stay connected to my reason for singing.
The Jamhouse connection
When I first walked into the jamhouse years ago, I remember feeling mesmerized by the place. In the short time spent there, I was immersed into another world, bubbling with creative energy. I met Emma years later, and since our initial meeting, life has beautifully woven us closer together. I never imagined I would record my first song in that magical house. When Emma reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to be a part of a collective medicine song album, it was an immediate yes for me. I feel honoured to work with Jamhouse Records and be a part of a community space that has marked the lives of so many people- especially musicians.
The universe of creative expression
If someone were to ask me what I do, I would probably say I am an Artist. Apart from music, visual art plays a big role in my life. I love to capture beauty through digital mediums, as well as create visionary art through painting, drawing, and other techniques. You can check out my art on Instagram at @aurorasoulart
Another role I am stepping into is that of a mother and birthworker. I had the privilege of recording my song, Fly Spirit Fly, at the Jamhouse in my early pregnancy, and as I write this I am entering my third trimester. Having chosen to walk the path of freebirth and conscious motherhood, I intend to share about my journey in order to inspire mothers and mothers-to-be all over the world. I will be learning traditional birthkeeping in order to support women who are choosing freebirth.
Although it may be challenging at times, I find it rewarding to be tending to all of the differents parts of my being. Like mycelium, I see all of these parts interconnected to create a thriving whole. Each part is essential. Allowing myself to be ALL of me, without trying to adhere to a single identity, is liberating. I desire to keep learning and exploring the universe of creative expression, and approaching this life with the curiosity of a child.
